Chinjao, who once went by Don Chinjao and the nickname Chinjao the Drill, is a retired pirate who heads the Chinjao Family and formerly led the Happo Navy as its 12th leader. He is grandfather to both Boo and Sai, fought at the Corrida Colosseum, and went on to side with Luffy through the Dressrosa Arc.
An elderly giant of a man standing roughly twice the height of an ordinary human, Chinjao sports bushy white brows, a flowing mustache, and a lengthy white beard. His bald head carries a dent at its crown, while the number 12, marking his Happo Navy rank, is tattooed onto his left temple. A pale green shirt trimmed in white bares his chest and rounded belly, dark yellow trousers complete the outfit, and his serene features sharpen into fury whenever rage lifts his facial hair upward.
In his younger days he sported a long buttoned blue shirt patterned with light green circles, draped with a yellow and gray captain's coat, and his head then ended in a long point that earned him his Drill epithet. A blow from Garp flattened that head into its dented shape, a glancing punch from Luffy restored its point, and his grandson Sai later bent it once more with a kick. While transformed by the Hobi Hobi no Mi in the anime he resembled a Santa Claus doll, while for the wedding of his grandson Sai he donned a mantle together with a bowtie.
Outwardly Chinjao is quiet and composed, perceptive enough to see straight through Luffy's disguise where others could not, and his imposing presence lends him a grave, solemn air. He takes enormous pride in his abnormal head and nursed a colossal grudge against Garp for crushing it, a grudge so sweeping that he wished to make Luffy pay for his grandfather's deeds and claimed he would have killed Dragon outright had he known the man was Garp's son. Even so, he keeps a measure of civility, addressing enemies with honorifics, though the mere proximity of Garp's bloodline can tip him into violent fury.
For all his vengefulness, he is deeply grateful to anyone who does him a kindness, and once Luffy restored his pointed head his grudge vanished entirely. He thinks little of the younger Worst Generation pirates, regarding only Blackbeard as having real promise, and he carries unshakable confidence in his own fighting skill. Proud of both his navy and his family, he arranged a marriage to extend his power, yet when Sai surpassed him by bending his head, Chinjao wept with joy rather than anger and handed over his title of Don. He also has a distinctive laugh, Hiyahoho.
As head of the Chinjao Family he holds absolute command over them, and in his golden age as a pirate he was counted a rival of Gol D. Roger as well as Garp, carrying a bounty of 542 million Berries. A master of Hasshoken, he favored vibration-charged punches and devastating headbutts, and before Garp flattened his skull his drill-shaped head could cleave the brutally hard Ice Continent apart by focusing every ounce of his force into its point. Restoring that point briefly returned his legendary strength, letting him cleave the Colosseum arena merely by falling on it head first. Even blunted, his head shatters rock and blocks swords, and he can unleash a flurry of headbutts that leave afterimages while keeping pace with Luffy's Gear Second.
Age has not robbed him of power, as he still felled the boxing champion Ideo in one strike and bent Cavendish's blade with his head alone, and his durability lets him shrug off thrown weapons and a Jet Pistol to the skull. He is one of the rare few who command all three forms of Haki: Supreme King Haki, which he used to knock out many C Block gladiators without touching them; Armament Haki, which hardens his fists and head for crushing blows; and Observation Haki.

When I first decided to commit to watching One Piece seriously, I knew I was embarking on one of anime's longest and most beloved series. With over 100...

The transformation everyone knows, the follow-up question nobody would touch. Why we made a smooth R&B track about the golden glow Dragon Ball never talks about....
Garp struck Chinjao with a blow that flattened his once drill-shaped, pointed head into the dented shape he carries afterward. This blow cost him some of the legendary head-based strength that once made him a rival to Gol D. Roger, and it left him carrying a lasting grudge against Garp.
Yes, in the anime Chinjao was transformed by the Hobi Hobi no Mi, taking on the appearance of a Santa Claus doll while under its effect.
Chinjao does not have a Devil Fruit of his own. His fighting strength instead comes from Hasshoken, a vibration-based martial art, along with mastery of Supreme King, Armament, and Observation Haki.
The number 12 tattooed on Chinjao's left temple marks his former rank as the 12th leader of the Happo Navy.
In his prime, Chinjao was regarded as a rival to Gol D. Roger and Monkey D. Garp, commanding a bounty of 542,000,000 Berries. He mastered Hasshoken and all three types of Haki, and his drill-shaped head could once cleave through the hardened Ice Continent.
