Tan-skinned, John has a wide rounded chin and high cheekbones, with round eyes set above dark under-circles, small ears, a faint dusting of facial hair, and a nose that is short and pointed. Brown hair of medium length spikes along his hairline before being tied back into three ponytails. His clothing runs to an open dark blue vest, black trousers with grey cuffs, and a yellow sash knotted at the waist, with a skull pendant strung on an orange chain. He keeps padding at the right hip, a shield strapped above his left elbow, and a black band on his right arm, while dragon tattoos wind around both arms. A rifle rides his back, a red-hilted sword sits on his left hip, and brown shoes finish the look.

A grateful sort, John was genuinely thankful toward the Straw Hats who looked after him and felt bad that his rescue had put them out. His nerve wavered when Isaac's machines bore down on the Thousand Sunny, yet he steeled himself and pushed forward all the same, set on guarding the vessel and clearing the debt he owed the crew that had saved his life.

Shortly before the Straw Hats made landfall on Jail Island, the Amber Pirates, John among them, raided Kohaku Harbor hunting the local treasure. The strike left him hurt, and his captain One-Man, sour over the failure, left him behind to perish. When Luffy, Chopper, and Jeanne arrived to help, One-Man rounded on them and branded John worthless, so Luffy challenged the captain and beat him down. Chopper and Jeanne hauled John aboard the Thousand Sunny and dressed his wounds.

Mending on deck, John offered his thanks and tipped Luffy off to a rumor about a Devil Fruit user near Jade Bridge. Later, when Isaac unleashed his robots on the island's residents, the still-healing John stepped off the ship braced to take on three of them, but Buggy turned up and wrecked the machines before any fight could start. His real fighting ability remains a mystery, since the raid left him too injured to demonstrate it; he carries a rifle and a sword, yet how skilled he is with either is untested.
