Mato

Slim for a giant, Mato has a rounded face, a lengthy nose, and orange eyes framed by long lashes. A scattering of freckles dots her cheeks, and her straw-toned hair sweeps outward to either side rather than falling down, forming wing-like shapes around her head. Her clothing consists of a pale tunic beneath a maroon apron reading WAR (rendered as WARLAND in the anime), finished with a string of round white pearls at her neck.

Following the example of her idol Ida, Mato matured into someone gentle, sympathetic, and respectful toward everyone she meets. In childhood she had a tender streak, breaking into sobs whenever Loki hurled insults at Ida. That softness coexists with a developed backbone, as years under Ida's guidance taught her to scold Loki for his rudeness. She also harbors an open admiration for Shanks, swooning over his courageous conduct to the point of a genuine crush.

Some forty-four years ago, Mato was already a child laborer at Ida's bar, looking on the tavernkeeper as a mother figure who comforted her in low moments. When Prince Loki mocked Ida after being rescued at sea, the young girl wept, and Ida soothed her. Fifteen years before the present, Ida fell to a mysterious illness, leaving Mato so shaken she refused to reopen the bar. Unknown to anyone, the sickness had been deliberate poisoning by relatives of the dead queen Estrid, meant to stop Ida from marrying King Harald. Ida's condition only worsened, and after her death Mato wept bitterly and took over the bar, running it ever since.

During the Egghead Arc, she tried to lift Colon's spirits after Shanks turned him away, warning he would disappoint Dorry and Brogy by fixating on the Emperor; when Shanks vowed not to let the approaching Kid Pirates spark a battle, she melted over him. In the Elbaph Arc, learning from Colon that the Giant Warrior Pirates and Straw Hats were headed for the Sun World, and that Colon meant to go along, she sent him off with the favorite dishes of his parents Ripley and Scopper Gaban.
