Pavlik is a heavyset man whose stubby legs and slender arms give him an unusual silhouette. He dresses in a gangster-styled outfit, pairing a black fedora with a white collared shirt, a dark tie, and a black coat. His look shifts between his appearances: at his debut he wore a captain's coat and a thick gray beard, while later panels, his concept art, and the anime show him with shorter facial hair and a white cape draped over the black coat.

Devotion drives Pavlik, who staked his own life and his crew's to rescue Ace, charging straight into the fight the moment the order came. That readiness reveals how highly he values friendship and loyalty to Whitebeard. He is also genuinely fearless, willing to take on Marine Headquarters itself and standing firm against an army of Pacifistas rather than retreating from even the most hopeless odds.

Pavlik built an infamous name for himself across the New World, a reputation that speaks to his strength as a pirate. In battle he relies on a large double-barreled flintlock powerful enough to blow the head clean off a Pacifista, the cyborg weapons the Marines deployed at Marineford.
