The Power That Will Shorten One's Life! Energy Hormone, Redux!

The crew panics as the legendary Garp commits to the battle, but Whitebeard waves him off as merely an old soldier. Akainu cuts in with his Hound Blaze, which Whitebeard deflects into still more wreckage. Sengoku calls up fresh executioners while the pirates break through, the Pacifista briefly halting them before the allied crews tear the cyborgs down. The surgeon warns Ivankov that Luffy is in grave danger.

Ace lowers his head over the lives lost for his sake, and a flashback recalls his boyhood, beating anyone who insulted Roger and asking Garp whether he deserved to exist. When Sengoku presses him, Ace, moved that his loved ones risk everything, declares he wants to live. Whitebeard weakens against Akainu as age tells, and Kizaru pierces Marco with twin beams while Aokiji freezes the distracted Jozu, leaving Akainu free to drive a magma fist into Whitebeard's chest. Pleading that he would rather die than be unable to fight, Luffy convinces a reluctant Ivankov to inject the hormones once more.

Whitebeard deflects Akainu's Hound Blaze, and the allies destroy the Pacifista blocking their advance. Ace recalls his childhood and Garp's words, then tells Sengoku he wants to live. Kizaru pierces Marco, Aokiji freezes Jozu, and Akainu lands a magma fist on Whitebeard. Despite the danger, Ivankov gives in to Luffy's pleas and injects the Tension Hormone, restoring his strength and spurring Koby to move.

Ivankov warns the energy hormones come at the cost of Luffy's lifespan and says he could not face Dragon if the boy died under his needle. The anime adds a scene about the replacement executioners for Ace, one of whom arrives late. In Ace's flashback the manga showed him holding a pole, but the anime leaves his hands empty, and the next-episode preview runs shorter than usual.
