Luffy's Peak - Attained! Gear 5

High on the Skull Dome, Luffy finishes his change, his fruit now fully awakened. Away at Mary Geoise, the Five Elders weigh the failed sacrifice of Guernika meant to stop him. They lay bare a truth the World Government had pursued fruitlessly for years: filed as a Paramecia, the Gomu Gomu no Mi is in fact a Mythical Zoan known by another name, the Nika model of the Hito Hito no Mi, whose awakened bearer becomes the Sun God Nika and warps the world around him like rubber.

Restored to full strength, Luffy lets loose a tide of Supreme King Haki that rolls over the Beasts Pirates on the floor beneath. Gripping Kaidou's serpent body, he drags it up to the roof and thrashes the Emperor with ease.

Kaidou unleashes Bolo Breath, but Luffy peels the ground upward to deflect the fireball, which rebounds off a wall and scorches its own source. Stymied at every turn, Kaidou confesses he is glad Luffy lived, unhappy to have won with Guernika's aid. In the treasure store, Orochi tries to wheedle Hiyori into prying out his Seastone nail, yet remembering his countless betrayals of Oden and the Wano people, she flatly refuses.

Reduced to a faint ember by the armory explosion, Kazenbo floats back to its master. Orochi orders the flame to incinerate Hiyori, but it disregards him and instead sets him burning beneath the rubble.

This Wano Country Arc chapter marks the screen debut of Gear Fifth within the canon storyline, the form having only flickered briefly during the non-canon feature One Piece Film: Red. It also brings in Raise as the new closing theme, the series' first ending song since Episode 278 roughly seventeen years prior. The adaptation has Luffy split the heavens with his Haki burst, montages his past gears, and lengthens the Hiyori and Orochi standoff.
