Episode 524 sees the Caribou Pirates routed when Momoo flees in terror, leaving their captain captured. A massive Kraken then blocks the deep-sea route, and Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji prepare to take it on.
The Caribou Pirates rush the Straw Hats. Caribou boards the Thousand Sunny, but his crew is hauled off by Momoo, who panics on recognizing the people who once humiliated him at Arlong Park. Isolated, Caribou is seized. The crew then meets the Kraken, which crushes the returning Caribou Pirates' ship before turning on the Sunny. The Straw Hats evade its blows, and the Monster Trio readies for battle.
As the two coated ships drift together, Caribou orders a boarding and lands on the Sunny, but the rest of his gang is dragged away by Momoo, who bolts the instant he recognizes Nami, Sanji, and Luffy. Alone and cornered, Caribou pleads not to be thrown into the sea and invents excuses to survive. Nami's lecture on undersea currents is cut short when a downward current sweeps the ship into the path of the legendary Kraken. Thrilled, Luffy decides to tame it. The returning Caribou Pirates are obliterated by the monster the moment they arrive. Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji coat themselves to fight, while the crew survives the creature's strikes thanks to Franky's new Rocket Launchers, Chopper's Guard Point, and Robin's enormous conjured hand deflecting a boulder. The episode closes with Luffy winding up his Gear Third.

This installment adapts more pages than any since Episode 404. The version of Momoo's memory differs between media: here he recalls Luffy's first punch, while the manga shows a later defeat at Arlong Park. Caribou's grumbling about his disadvantage and Luffy poking him with a stick are both cut. Sanji's photo collection notably includes a picture of Kokoro, and Robin's sketch of the Kraken, originally from an SBS feature, is shown on screen. Chopper no longer needs a Rumble Ball to reach Guard Point. The timing of Robin's line about her power working briefly underwater is shifted relative to the manga.
