Summary

It rankles the emperor and his two top officers that the lord's band holds so firm, the more so once Shinobu throws in with them. Deciding to settle it himself, the emperor looses his Bolo Breath, and the blast washes over the lord without leaving a mark. The two captains break away into a private duel; the retainers, meanwhile, take on the pair of officers. The emperor seizes the advantage and casts the lord down into the flaming earth beneath. Rising again, the lord sheathes both blades in Ryuo and springs upward. The fire nearly drives him back, but he forces his way through it and carves into the emperor's flesh, the first wound the giant had ever suffered.

Key Events

Reverted to human shape, the emperor stands open to the killing stroke, yet the lord hesitates. Higurashi, made up as Momonosuke and held under a blade by an underling, steals his focus for exactly the moment the emperor needs to land a mortal blow. Kin'emon and Ashura charge in to help and are struck down by the two officers. The lord falls, handing the Beasts Pirates their victory. Fires kindled in the fight tear through the Udon woods for five days until rain at last extinguishes them. The surviving Scabbards are jailed in the Flower Capital, all save Shinobu, whom the lord had publicly disavowed so she would escape arrest. Their sentence comes down: death by boiling in three days. When the day arrives, the rare punishment pulls a great crowd; as the lord mounts the plank, an executioner slips in spilled oil and plunges into the pot to a grisly death. Just before stepping in himself, the lord proposes a bargain to Orochi, that enduring a fixed span in the cauldron would win his followers their freedom. Yamato and Tsurube appear for the first time, and the lord's Tougen Totsuka technique makes its debut.

Notes

The adaptation stretches out the duel. Both officers are rendered in full view rather than left in shadow as the source kept them, and one is shown taking to the air on the wings at his back without shifting into pteranodon form. The moment that brands Raizo's brow with a crescent scar is dropped, and the other officer wears a shorter mustache than he does in the present day. Most notably, the emperor returns to human form and readies a clash before the hostage ploy breaks the lord's concentration, where the source held him in beast form throughout. The episode continues the Wano Country saga.
