The Agotogi Sand Merchants were a gang of thugs operating in Arabasta, headed by the grinning ruffian Agotogi. Roughly eleven years before Princess Vivi's return home, they attempted to abduct her for ransom.
This criminal outfit took its name from its boss, a tan, average-height man with spiky red hair, a hooked nose, and a permanently pointed chin who was rarely seen without a grin. Agotogi favored an open green kimono dotted with purple, brown trousers held up by a yellow sash, and plain sandals, and he carried a large knife into a fight.
The gang appears in a flashback set in the desert nation of Arabasta, where they preyed on the vulnerable for profit.
Greed drove the group's defining act. Agotogi schemed to seize the young Vivi and trade her for money, refusing to back off even when his plan started to crumble. He showed no mercy in the process, willing to harm children if it served his ends.
The merchants intercepted Vivi as she traveled to a Sand-Sand Clan gathering and overpowered the clan's fighters. Yet for all their menace, they were not strong: Agotogi himself was beaten by Koza, then only a boy.
Agotogi led the gang and was its only prominent figure. When the thugs scattered the Sand-Sand Clan, Koza urged Vivi to flee toward nearby ruins. Agotogi chased her but was knocked from a broken wall by a blow from Koza's club. He retaliated by slashing the boy's face, only to be struck down himself and left unconscious. As two of his men moved to kill Koza, Cobra arrived and drove them off, while Pell and Chaka mopped up the rest of the gang.
