Centaurs

Unlike the half-horse figures of classical legend, these Centaurs blend a human upper body with the lower half of almost any beast. The roster spans an alligator, a bull, a spider, a jaguar, and a giraffe, with only a few such as Smooge keeping the traditional equine shape. Their existence traces back to a single source: the cutting powers of Trafalgar Law's Devil Fruit, which grafted animal halves onto men who had lost the use of their legs.

For a stretch of time the Centaurs served as the standing army defending Caesar Clown's hideout on Punk Hazard. They patrolled the island and moved against intruders, including an early ambush on the Straw Hat crew near a frozen lake. Their loyalty held until Caesar's downfall, after which the unit lost its purpose and scattered into captivity.

Most of the ranks were pirates captured by the Marines and shipped to Punk Hazard to serve as test subjects for Vegapunk and Caesar. An explosion during gas experimentation four years earlier crippled their lower bodies, and Law later fitted them with animal legs to build the army. Brownbeard, real name Chadros Higelyges, and his crew were exceptions, having been maimed in a fight with Basil Hawkins. Named members include the alligator Brownbeard, the horse Smooge, the bull Chappe, the spider Run, the jaguar Hyoutauros, and the giraffe Kirintauros. Once Caesar fell to Law and the Straw Hats, those petrified by his new gas were revived by comrades and rounded up by the G-5 Marines, while one was reportedly snatched away and sealed inside Big Mom's book of rare creatures.
