Laser

Item

Lasers, also called beams, are concentrated rays of light able to bore through solid matter and trigger powerful blasts. Inspired by Kizaru's Pika Pika no Mi, Dr. Vegapunk reproduced them as weapons, technology so advanced that only a handful, like Franky and Queen, have since copied it.

Overview

A laser is a tightly focused light ray that pierces solid material and sets off large explosions. Admiral Kizaru produces them naturally through his Pika Pika no Mi, and that display drove his friend Dr. Vegapunk to recreate the effect with machinery. Franky later built his own beam, the Radical Beam, by studying Vegapunk's research, while Queen developed laser weaponry during or after his time with MADS and named his version Black Coffee. Such weapons are reckoned far ahead of the world's general technology and remain extremely rare.

Function

When fired, a laser races in a straight line at light speed and strikes almost instantly, reaching targets kilometers off. A hit on a person tends to pass cleanly through and is frequently fatal; Vegapunk himself died after a beam punched through his chest. Against the ground or a large structure, the beams erupt into fierce explosions hot enough to melt iron. Their speed makes them nearly impossible to dodge or block, the lone exception being Sanji, who once dispersed one of Kizaru's beams with a kick and credited the feat to the power of love.

Notable Users

The earliest widely known laser arms were the Pacifista, including the prototype PX-0, Bartholomew Kuma, which fire beams from their palms and mouths; the Mark III units and the Seraphim share the ability. Egghead's Labophase is ringed by auto-triggering laser defenses tied to its Frontier Dome. The Ancient Weapon wielded by Imu and the Five Elders, fueled by the Mother Flame, can rain multiple island-destroying beams from the sky. Other approximations include Vinsmoke Ichiji's Sparking Red bursts, Caesar Clown's Gastille, Big Mom's Maser Ho, and Marcus Mars's mouth-fired energy beams.
