Atop the roof of the Skull Dome, Kaidou demands that Yamato turn the guardian-deity fruit's powers toward governing and protecting Wano, calling it a precious Mythical Zoan. He even admires how Orochi's greed reshaped the land into a great weapons factory ready to be seized. Yamato dismisses every word of it, promising instead to shield the country from Kaidou and unlock it for the outside world. The two then trade elemental breath, Yamato's Namuji Hyoga meeting Kaidou's Bolo Breath.

Within the third-floor banquet hall, Robin is drawn toward apparitions of her mother Olvia, Professor Clover, and Saul. Brook's frantic warnings halt her, and she answers with Tres Mano: Freesia to smash the illusions. The masked attackers prove to be Maria's subordinates concealed behind an Illusion Mist: a pair of SMILE eaters, Tenjo-Sagari beside Nure-Onna, together with the Number called Kunyun. Fleeing through a corridor, the two Straw Hats observe how alike their wounded pasts have left them. Maria whirls her flaming Wanyudo staff, sets the floor ablaze, and hangs upside down on spider silk, while Brook smothers the fires with Cold Soul and Soul Parade so Robin lands safely.

The duel between Yamato and Kaidou continues. The fruit Yamato once ate is named: a Mythical Zoan tied to the Okuchi no Makami, an animal Wano honors as its guardian deity. Kaidou's Bolo Breath turns aside the breath attack Yamato launches.

Black Maria's battle against Robin and Brook gets underway. Her mist disguises three underlings as Olvia, Clover, and Saul; the trio consists of one hognose-snake SMILE eater, one white-snake SMILE eater, and a Number, named in turn Nure-Onna, Tenjo-Sagari, and Kunyun. Her staff is driven by a pug SMILE user, Wanyudo. Robin takes Maria one-on-one while Brook deals with the rest, debuting Gigante Fleur to raise a huge many-armed clone. Reaching land with the Heart Pirates, Luffy reunites with Shinobu and Momonosuke at Tokage Port as Caribou hides nearby, then asks the boy to fly him back up.

When Maria taunts that Sanji lured Robin into danger and that her crew will betray her, Robin counters that she knows his kindness well, naming Sanji one of two wings that let the future Pirate King take flight, then unveils her towering Gigante Fleur clone. At Udon's Tokage Port, a recovered Luffy who has eaten meat is reunited with the Heart Pirates and rejoined by Shinobu and Momonosuke, and he points up at the drifting island to ask the boy to become a dragon and bear him aloft. Maria's staff turns out to be a living SMILE user, also called Wanyudo, who keeps its flame burning by scampering inside the wheel like a hamster. This is the 1020th chapter of the Wano Country Arc, and its cover answers a request for Denjiro dreaming of giant shrimp tempura while gnawing his own pompadour.
