A Man Named Dalton

Marching back into Bighorn, Wapol orders the residents to bow to him again as their ruler. His crew tells him the Straw Hats have landed, and he immediately swears revenge. When the men report that his old fortress still stands with Dr. Kureha now living inside, the deposed king fixes on retaking it.

Before he can act, Dalton races down from the hills and slams a heavy blow into him. Wapol pulls through only because of his private squad of twenty elite physicians, the Isshi-20. Here the truth of his reign emerges: he expelled every other healer from the kingdom so that those twenty alone would serve him, holding the people's very lives hostage through their health. With its doctors gone, the town once celebrated for medicine collapsed into ruin.

Dalton, sickened by such cowardice and greed, moves to strike a second time. Knowing his nature well, Chess and Kuromarimo redirect their arrows at the townsfolk who had gathered behind him. Dalton steps into the line of fire and lets the shafts bury themselves in his own chest to spare the villagers. Up the slope, the lapahn keep failing to corner Luffy and Sanji, and their strange pounding on the snow finally unleashes a huge avalanche that puts everyone in peril.

Wapol's scheme is revealed: he banished all of Drum's physicians except his Isshi-20 to dominate the populace through their health. Dalton's power is named here, the bison-form Devil Fruit known as the Ushi Ushi no Mi, and this marks the very first time the classification Zoan is attached to such a fruit. Dalton also gives up his own safety to keep Wapol's archers from killing the villagers.

The cover, part of the Jango's Dance Paradise serial, finds Jango aghast: the law has trailed him as far as Mirror Ball Island, where his face is already being circulated among the locals on a wanted bill. His bounty is given as 9,000,000 berries. The chapter falls within the Drum Island Arc.
