Summary

The new term begins with Anya glued to her bed. Loid invokes Becky and Damian to rouse her, briefly reminding her of her resolution to find out whether Donovan Desmond shares her telepathy, but laziness wins until he physically drags her up. Her excuses escalate from a sore neck, which Loid diagnoses as a sleeping crick, to a fake cold. Yor's earnest worry and Loid's sudden concern about school avoidance embarrass Anya into going after all. At Eden, she quizzes Damian about his father, hears in his thoughts that they have not met since the family dinner, and promptly writes him off, recommitting instead to the Imperial Scholar route toward Donovan. Two forgotten classmates reintroduce themselves as Meg and Connie, and Becky explains the school's new ability-sorted classes. Anya dreads isolation and losing access to Damian, but the assignment boards deliver relief: Class F for Language Studies holds them both, his low marks in the subject matching hers.

Science class brings stranger company. Connie joins her, and Arnold Crowley, her would-be dance partner from the end-of-term party, is baffled that she has forgotten him too. Attention soon turns to Tertius, a prince from the small northern nation of Septevia studying abroad through Specter Hall. Anya then picks up the panicked thoughts of a delinquent-looking classmate: the supposed mole on Tertius's cheek is actually his own flung booger, and he fears an international incident if it is traced back. His clumsy attempt to wipe it off reads to Tertius as bullying, and the two square up, the prince projecting strength for his country while the delinquent frets over Ostania's honor.

Sensing classmates counting on her, Anya strides in to break it up. She whispers her full knowledge of the "snot war" to the grateful delinquent, then balks at grabbing the booger barehanded. Tertius, primed by rumors painting her as a savage brawler, panics and offers a flower in chivalrous self-defense, which Anya immediately weaponizes as a snot-removal tool, grinning in a way that terrifies him further. Steeled by memories of combat training with his steward back home, he dodges her charge, but Anya has already read the memory and knows he breaks right. Her neck crick makes her fumble the flower, it smacks his face, the booger drops, and the delinquent palms it, swapping in a leaf as cover. Apologies follow once the teacher arrives. Tertius offers Anya a legendary jewel, and when she calls out the lie he misreads her restraint as noble selflessness, deciding Eden and Ostania's children have much to teach him. Becky later finds Anya flanked by an adoring Tertius, flower in hand and angling for a home visit, and the delinquent, who introduces himself as Freddy of Hamilton Hall, while Damian stares in disbelief.
