Iyo Washuu

What most people notice first about Iyo is the gentle smile she seems to wear at all hours. She presents as a graceful, attractive woman, her dark hair kept long, giving off an air of refinement that fits her upbringing among the elite.

Iyo carries herself with courtesy and steady encouragement toward Matsuri, standing behind his ambitions even when their meaning is lost on her. Outsiders tend to find her charming: when Kuki Urie is introduced to her, he comes away thinking she is a splendid partner, which leaves him puzzled that Matsuri privately dismisses her as dull.

Born into a distinguished and long-established family, Iyo was matched with Matsuri Washuu through an arrangement between two wealthy houses before he departed for Germany. During his absence he was obligated to send her a letter each month, a duty he undertook without enthusiasm. After the operation against Rose, she accompanied him to a social gathering, where he cheerfully presented her to Urie, who happened to be standing by himself.

When the Washuu bloodline was later slaughtered following the landing at Rushima, Iyo was not among the dead. In the years after V was destroyed, Matsuri turned his back on his family name and ended their marriage. Because the true nature of the Washuu remains murky, it is never fully settled whether Iyo is human or ghoul, nor whether she ever grasped what her husband really was.
