Touka Kirishima faces Akira Mado at last and admits without hesitation that she is the ghoul who killed Akira's father. She then leads Akira to a park where young ghouls, survivors of the island where Aogiri Tree once operated, are at play. Hinami Fueguchi joins the children while Touka points out that Hinami, like Akira, lost her parents. Akira bristles, reminding Touka that her own father took Hinami's parents' lives, and refuses to spare these ghouls any sympathy, declaring that ghouls of any age will eventually kill to feed. She stands by her father and denies his work was ever a mistake.

Touka replies that she is not asking for pity but instead feels a kinship with Akira. She speaks of her own father, Arata, who hunted in secret and hid his ghoul nature from her, and who threw his life away chasing revenge for her mother Hikari. Touka calls him a fool and says that, father or not, she cannot condone what he did. She adds that Hinami never carried any resentment toward Akira's father, and asks whether clinging to the past has kept Akira from living in the present.

Taking Akira by the hand, Touka brings her down among the children, who embrace Touka and, at her urging, wrap their arms around Akira as well. Hinami opens her arms in invitation, and when Touka gives Akira a push, the two come together in an embrace. The moment breaks Akira, who weeps and wonders aloud whom she was ever meant to hate and whom she should hate now.

Touka confesses to Akira that she killed Kureo Mado. She reveals Hinami's parallel loss and her own father's fatal quest for vengeance. The ghoul children and Hinami embrace Akira, moving her to tears and shaking her certainty about her hatred.

In a later interview, Sui Ishida said the reconciliation drew on a documentary about the Vietnam War, modeled on a real meeting between an American veteran and the daughter of a Vietnamese soldier he had killed.
