:re Chapter 171

Renji Yomo comes to the wounded Uta, who reflects mournfully on their past. Uta recalls once believing either of them might kill the other, and the time they both broke their legs and Itori carried them home. Whatever the cost, he calls their recent clash the most fun he has had, and admits that Yomo's leaving with Yoshimura felt like losing him to somewhere far off. He revisits their failed bid to kill Kishou Arima in revenge for Hikari Kirishima and confesses he could never adjust to how the world had changed.

Yomo says he once felt the same, sure the world held only loss, until Anteiku burned and he no longer knew what he should have done. The Third Cochlea Raid taught him to stand and fight rather than lose anyone, and he admits that Kaneki and Touka becoming a couple with a child showed him the world was more than despair. He tells Uta he may try to eat him again one day, but since he intends to live to be a grand-uncle, he will fight at full strength, and he asks the crippled Uta to trouble no one else. Calling it a special offer, the two rekindle their friendship, and Yomo carries Uta to safety as Itori observes that only Yomo could change him.

Elsewhere, a battered Donato Porpora goads Koutarou Amon to keep going, and Tomoe notices him holding back. Takizawa explains that Amon cannot kill the man he has clung to since childhood, much as Kousuke Houji once faced Donato, and throws down the cross necklace, asking why Amon still wears it. Resolved, Amon rises and destroys Donato's clone. Recalling his old belief that ghouls had twisted the world, he reflects that becoming one taught him more, that ghouls will always be feared, and that he too has warped the world. Landing the final blow on Donato's torso, he admits he truly loved him.

Yomo and Uta reconcile their long rivalry, and Yomo carries his crippled friend to safety. Yomo credits Kaneki and Touka's family with restoring his hope. Takizawa pushes Amon to stop holding back against Donato. Amon accepts his love for the man who raised him and delivers the killing blow.
