Sour Face

What draws the eye first is the pinched, puckered set of his features, strained as though something intensely sour has just crossed his tongue, topped off by a cleft chin. Early panels rendered him as a hulking, muscular figure, though later chapters shrank him down considerably. His vision is dismal enough that a pair of thick lenses becomes necessary just to follow the news on a hospital television.

He delights in belittling Charanko over sloppy etiquette, whether the younger man slacks off in training or slips into the Super Fight without Bang's blessing, unaware in the latter case that Saitama had claimed the slot under Charanko's name. Devotion to his old teacher runs deep, while Garou earns nothing but resentment for the dojo rampage that crippled him and forced him out. Sour Face still stews over the idea that leaving cost him the title of Bang's number-one disciple, and he remains plainly terrified of the Hero Hunter.

Crowds rattle him badly. After edging past the equally nervous Jakumen, he lavishes praise on his opponent rather than risk looking small in defeat. That same anxiety pushes him into an informal alliance with "Charanko," helping fix the disguised Saitama's belt and cheering him for talking back to Zakos. Trusting to a fault, he stays convinced the bald man before him is Charanko even after the wig is knocked loose.

Sour Face once stood as Bang's number-two student before Garou tore through the dojo on a training day and drove him to walk away; afterward he devised the Sourface Style Kenpo and opened a school of his own. He enters the Super Fight hoping a victory will steel him against ever being cowed by Bang or Garou again. Saitama flatly calls the effort pitiful, pointing out that Sour Face is merely play-acting a bout with Garou while Charanko once faced the man alone and head-on, which sends Sour Face storming from the waiting room with a challenge on his lips.

He is stunned watching Suiryu crush Max, then bests the nervous Jakumen in his opening bout to mutual applause. When his own match against Saitama arrives, he vows to teach the newcomer the true meaning of martial power and is promptly flattened by the very uppercut that downed Bakuzan. He keeps warning Saitama about brutal opponents like Choze, only to watch each one dispatched in seconds. After the finals, the closing ceremony is hijacked by Gouketsu and the Three Crows, who force the fighters to choose between monsterhood and death; a terrified Sour Face watches some accept, is saved by Suiryu from Choze's energy ball, and is eventually knocked cold by the crows.

He later recovers in a hospital alongside Zakos and Lin Lin. By the Neo Heroes Saga he has returned to Bang's dojo, needling Garou for missing a dusty patch while he mops the floor and nudging him toward a part-time job to ease the school's money troubles. In combat he is genuinely tough, surviving Saitama's launching blow with only minor injury, and his repertoire spans the choke-based Sourface Style Kenpo along with the Water Stream Rock Smashing Fist absorbed under Bang.
