Appearance

Two bodies define Ririn. Her artificial human shell, or Gigai, presents a petite blonde child whose eyes are a vivid blue, dressed in red boots and a fur-lined pink coat with a cape cut to resemble a black bird. While putting Ichigo Kurosaki and his companions through her trials, she toted a pink clock topped by a golden heart-shaped handle. Stripped of that Gigai, her spirit instead occupies a stuffed bird wearing a hooded blue coat and a red bow tie.

Personality

Ririn appoints herself the head of the sensing trio she forms with Noba and Kurodo, and few things delight her more than a good game. Paired off with Ichigo, she bristles at him early on, since their temperaments clash, yet that friction slowly turns into real attachment, enough that Rukia Kuchiki's closeness to him sparks her jealousy. Bratty and full of herself on the surface, she nonetheless throws herself into danger again and again to shield her companions, whether that means Ichigo, Rukia, Kon, or the others. She tends to look down on Kon as beneath her and her two fellow Mod Souls, which keeps the two of them constantly squabbling.

History

Everything about Ririn belongs to the anime's Bount storyline, which sits outside the canon manga. Urahara engineers her, Noba, and Kurodo as living Bount detectors, and she debuts by bossing the trio into abducting Orihime Inoue and stringing Ichigo's group through a gauntlet of timed contests and mazes before the ruse collapses and Urahara claims them as his Mod Souls. Handed to Ichigo as his assigned partner, she sulks at the pairing and promptly brawls with Kon over the plush bird shell she ends up inhabiting. She joins the raid on Jin Kariya's estate, where Maki Ichinose overwhelms the three Mod Souls, and later hunts Bounts alongside Ichigo, tangling with Go Koga. After the group forces its way into Soul Society, a jealous fit sends her off alone, only to find Rukia losing to Yoshi; the wounded pair are rescued by Byakuya Kuchiki.

Her defining gift is illusion. Built to warp how a place looks, she disorients enemies so that she or her partners can strike, and she pairs this with surprising quickness, long-range spirit sensing, and a scheming mind that once wove a labyrinth only Uryu Ishida could unravel. So long as her core Gikon stays intact, her Gigai cannot truly be destroyed. In the later Arrancar episodes she and her fellow Mod Souls rescue Kon from Grand Fisher and back Renji Abarai against the Arrancar Patros, where she baits him into wasting an attack so Kurodo can pin his weapon and Renji can finish him. She is among those who see Ichigo, Sado, and Uryu off to Hueco Mundo.
