Real World and Shinigami! The New Year Special!

In Soul Society, Yachiru kicks off the Women's Association New Year party by handing out cards, then stages a men-versus-women karuta tournament. Hitsugaya's attempt to speak with Rangiku is repeatedly derailed as the two sides bicker over the drawings. The match quickly descends into chaos when Kira releases his Zanpakutō to cheat, prompting everyone to reach for cards using their releases and Kidō. When a black-cat card representing Yoruichi is called, Suì-Fēng unleashes her Bankai to claim it, leveling the building. Amid the wreckage, Rangiku finally asks Hitsugaya what he wanted, and he simply wishes her a happy New Year.

In the Human World, Orihime greets her late brother and wanders town, observing families spending the holiday together, from the Kurosaki sisters to the Asano and Ishida households. Renji and Rukia arrive on their New Year rounds and pull a reluctant Orihime along. At the Urahara Shop they pound rice cakes and share a meal, with nearly every mishap somehow landing on Renji, whose attempt to eat the sea bream sparks a scuffle with Tessai. Orihime later calls it her best New Year in years, and she and Rukia join Ichigo and the others to pray at the shrine, where Orihime wishes for another wonderful year with everyone.

The Gotei 13's men and women turn a karuta game into an all-out battle, ending with Suì-Fēng destroying the venue to win Yoruichi's card. In the Human World, Orihime spends the holiday with Renji, Rukia, and the Urahara household, culminating in a group shrine visit. Both stories keep to lighthearted, slice-of-life stakes.

This anime-only special is built from two self-contained segments. Its Human World half draws on the winter color spread from Chapter 287, with the cast in kimono visiting a shrine. A closing Illustrated Picture Book segment notes that Urahara and Yoruichi share back-to-back New Year birthdays that everyone once again forgets. The episode aired in Japan on January 4, 2011, with the opening Melody of the Wild Dance and the ending Last Moment.
