Summary

At the Seireitei's research institute, Hiyosu pores over old footage of Rukia in her gigai from Don Kanonji's broadcast, needled by Akon over his obsession. When the recovered gigai finally arrives, the researchers marvel at its flawless make and note it carries no maker's signature. Kuna credits Akon, who denies building it and guesses at his captain Mayuri, until Hiyosu spots something that stuns them all. Akon concludes the craftsmanship is beyond anyone in Soul Society and declares its maker must have been banished long ago, the skill alone grounds for exile. Beneath his shop, Urahara notes his gateway is nearly finished.

At one in the morning on August 8th, Ichigo waits by his window as instructed and is ambushed by a grotesque summons: a ball painted with Urahara's caricature bursts open in his closet, oozing blood-like fluid that spells out an order to gather at the shop, capped by a jab that anyone who found it creepy has no humor. Slipping out, Ichigo dodges a flying-tackle greeting from Isshin, who presses a good-luck charm on him, one he claims Masaki once gave him and is only lending for the trip, threatening to shave his beard if it is lost.

Running through the streets, Ichigo falls in with Orihime, who received the same joke about her sense of humor, and they reach the shop to find Sado already waiting, his summons scrawled in a nearby alley. Sado assumes Uryu will skip it, but Uryu arrives in a new outfit, insisting his rematch with the Shinigami has nothing to do with Rukia. Urahara greets them and opens his doors, warning them to listen closely or die on the way.
