In the forty-ninth chapter, Momo, Seiko, and Manjiro fail to exorcise the Evil Eye from Jiji. Over dinner with Aira and the Dover Demon, plans form to hire the Hayashi Performers, and Seiko deduces that cold liquids summon the spirit while hot ones restore Jiji.
At the Ayase home, Momo, Seiko, and Manjiro try to force the Evil Eye from Jiji's body while it stays lodged in Taro, but the spirit endures and mocks their effort. Indoors, Aira joins dinner and indignantly questions why she, the self-styled leader, was excluded from the mission, which makes Momo wonder why she is present at all. Momo also turns to the Dover Demon for his reason to return, and he explains his son's cow stopped giving milk and would die on his planet.
Seiko and Manjiro debate hiring exorcists and settle on the Hayashi Performers, though Manjiro doubts they can manage given Jiji's powerful spirit. Taro reacts to hot oden, and the group is stunned to hear Jiji's voice from him. Wary it could be the Evil Eye faking, Seiko has Taro reveal his face while leaving the seal intact, exposing Jiji restored and glad to see everyone. She then works out the trigger: cold water frees the Evil Eye while hot oden soup brings Jiji back.
Seiko, Manjiro, and Momo attempt the exorcism but get nowhere. The whole household, Aira included, sits down to eat. The Mantisian explains his return: his cow no longer yields milk and his planet's air makes that impossible, so he chooses to settle on Earth beside Chiquitita. Seiko and Manjiro decide to summon the Hayashi, though splitting Jiji from the spirit risks lingering aftereffects. After Taro is fed a hot bun, the Evil Eye recedes and Jiji reclaims his body. Seiko verifies that cold drinks turn him into the Evil Eye while warm ones revert him to Jiji.
