Biography and Story Role

Android 21 was originally a human scientist and the mother of the boy who would become the template for Android 16. After her son's death, she was converted into a Bio-Android by Dr. Gero, incorporating cells from numerous fighters including the Majin Buu lineage. These Majin cells gave her an overwhelming hunger to absorb other beings, which gradually overtook her rational mind and split her personality into good and evil halves.

In the storyline of Dragon Ball FighterZ, Android 21 orchestrated events that brought together heroes and villains alike. She cloned many of the franchise's fighters and used energy-suppressing waves to weaken the originals, feeding on the clones to grow stronger. The game featured three narrative paths, each revealing different aspects of her character. In the hero path, the good side of Android 21 ultimately sacrificed herself to destroy her evil half, choosing death over living as a monster.

Android 21's popularity led to her inclusion in the Dragon Ball Super manga's Super Hero arc, where she was confirmed as the mother of the human Dr. Gero modeled Android 16 after. This gave her a foothold in the main continuity beyond the game's standalone story.

Abilities and Design

Android 21 possesses one of the most versatile power sets in the franchise. Her Majin cells grant her the ability to transform opponents into food (typically sweets like macarons and cupcakes) and absorb them, gaining their abilities in the process. She can fire energy blasts, fly, regenerate, and use techniques stolen from absorbed fighters. Her true form resembles Majin Buu, with pink skin, pointed ears, and a tail.

Her design draws from multiple Dragon Ball traditions. In her human form, she appears as an attractive scientist with glasses and long auburn hair. Her true Majin form retains her human silhouette but adds the pink coloring and white hair associated with the Buu lineage. This dual-natured design reflects her split personality and the constant internal struggle between her intellectual human side and her ravenous Majin instincts.
