Five years after defeating Piccolo at the World Martial Arts Tournament, Goku introduces his young son Gohan to his closest friends. Their peaceful reunion is shattered when a mysterious armored warrior arrives on Earth, targeting powerful fighters.

The mysterious warrior reveals himself as Raditz, Goku's older brother, and exposes the truth about Goku's alien heritage. When Goku refuses to join the Saiyans in their conquest, Raditz kidnaps Gohan to force his compliance.

Goku and Piccolo throw everything they have at Raditz, but the Saiyan warrior's power is overwhelming. Only through the ultimate sacrifice can they hope to stop him, and Goku pays the highest price a father can.

The Z Fighters gather to face Vegeta and Nappa, but first they must survive a cruel game against the Saibamen. What begins as a test of strength ends in tragedy when Yamcha falls to a Saibaman's suicidal attack.

Nappa enters the fight and proves far beyond anything the Z Fighters can handle. Chiaotzu sacrifices himself in a desperate kamikaze attack, and Tien burns through his life force in one final Tri-Beam, but neither can stop the Saiyan brute.

Krillin and Gohan rescue the young Namekian Dende from Dodoria's grasp and escape using the Solar Flare technique. Vegeta intercepts the pursuing Dodoria and learns the devastating truth about Planet Vegeta's destruction at Frieza's hands, then eliminates the messenger.
