Octopus-like humanoid aliens with varied skin colors who serve throughout the Frieza Force. Named after the mid-ranking soldier Appule, this species appears frequently as foot soldiers across multiple eras of the galactic empire.
Appule's race consists of octopus-like humanoids who come in a striking range of skin tones: purple, orange, yellow, and green. Their eyes are typically white or red, and individual members often sport golden, red, dark, or purple spots across their arms, heads, and legs. Some members grow large fangs or horns, giving the species significant visual variety despite sharing the same basic body plan. Roughly human-sized, they are built for service rather than dominance, filling the ranks of Frieza's military machine as mid-level soldiers, technicians, and support personnel. Their homeworld remains unnamed, but their widespread presence across the Frieza Force suggests the species was recruited or conquered early in the empire's history.
Members of this race have served the Frieza Clan for generations. A horned individual worked aboard the spaceship of Chilled, Frieza's distant ancestor, tending to the space pirate after his defeat. This confirms the species' involvement with the Frieza Clan stretches back centuries. In Bardock's era, another member served on Team Dodoria and was the first of that squad to fall to Bardock's assault. On Planet Frieza 79, a member of the race worked in the control tower, handling communications and logistics.
The species' most prominent individual is Appule himself, a mid-ranking soldier who served Frieza directly during the invasion of Namek. Appule was tasked with guarding the healing pod containing Vegeta after the Saiyan prince was severely wounded. When Vegeta recovered and escaped, Appule became one of the first casualties of the Namek Saga's rapidly escalating violence. Despite his brief role, Appule left enough of an impression that his entire race is identified by his name, a dubious honor for a soldier whose greatest moment was failing at guard duty.
The sheer number of this species' members scattered across the Frieza Force speaks to their role in the organization: reliable, expendable, and everywhere. They appear in the background of nearly every Frieza Force scene during the Namek Saga, manning stations, patrolling corridors, and dying in droves as the Z Fighters tear through Frieza's ranks. Additional members appeared among the soldiers in Resurrection 'F', confirming the species survived the empire's collapse and continued serving under Sorbet's reconstituted army. They are the quintessential Frieza Force grunts, not powerful enough to stand out individually, but numerous enough to make the empire feel like a real, functioning military operation rather than just a handful of named villains.
