Saute-jin

Race

The Saute-jin are a race of tall, humanoid extraterrestrials from Planet Saute. Their only known members are the wanted criminal Gryll and his gang, who operate as outlaws in the Milky Way Galaxy and were encountered during the events of Dragon Ball Super.

Tall, Marked, and Wanted

The Saute-jin hail from a world called Planet Saute and stand considerably taller than the average Earthling. Their physical appearance is distinctly humanoid but features several alien characteristics: different colored skin across individuals, distinctive markings on their shoulders, and abdominal sections that appear metallic in color, resembling sculpted muscle plates made from some kind of natural biological metal.

Their clothing is minimal, typically consisting of some form of spandex undergarment. Whether this sparse attire reflects their culture, climate adaptation, or simply the lifestyle of the criminal members seen in the series remains unknown, as no civilian or non-criminal Saute-jin has ever been depicted.

Gryll and His Gang

The only known Saute-jin are Gryll and the members of his criminal gang, who are wanted throughout the Milky Way Galaxy. Gryll's gang appears during Dragon Ball Super, establishing the Saute-jin as yet another alien race whose representatives happened to cross paths with the Z Fighters' extended circle of contacts.

The fact that the only known Saute-jin are criminals does not necessarily reflect on the species as a whole. Across the Dragon Ball multiverse, species tend to produce individuals on all sides of the moral spectrum, from heroic defenders to galactic outlaws. The Saute-jin may well have a perfectly functional civilization back on their homeworld, with Gryll's gang representing the exception rather than the rule.

One Planet, One Gang

Very little is known about Saute-jin society, culture, or history beyond what can be inferred from Gryll and his associates. Their homeworld's name, Saute, follows the food-themed naming convention that Toriyama applies to many alien species in Dragon Ball, referencing the cooking technique of sauteing.

The Saute-jin remain one of the more obscure races introduced in Dragon Ball Super, appearing briefly and without deep exploration. They serve the narrative purpose of populating the universe with diverse alien life, reminding viewers that the cosmos is full of species and civilizations that exist entirely outside the main characters' awareness until circumstances bring them into contact.
