Kotetsu Hagane

Kotetsu wears his black hair long and spiky above dark eyes, with a strip of bandage crossing the bridge of his nose and a pale mark on his chin. He turns out in the standard Konoha uniform, forehead protector and flak jacket included, and normally straps a pair of bladed weapons to his back when heading out on a mission. Two years after the war, in The Last, he updates his look with the village's newer flak jacket, high-topped sandals, and an armband on his left arm bearing the Uzumaki clan emblem.

Kotetsu is the looser, more slapdash half of the duo, happy to duck his duties and lounge in the Jōnin Standby Station eating syrup, a habit that draws gentle reproach from the more principled Izumo. He is curious by nature, once disguising himself as a genin just to size up the year's Chūnin Exam hopefuls, and he grumbles freely whenever he is saddled with trivial tasks. Beneath the laziness, though, sits a loyal and dutiful shinobi who loves his village and follows through on every assignment, and he holds particular respect for the accomplished Asuma Sarutobi.

In one anime outing Kotetsu leads a genin squad of Naruto, Rock Lee, and Shino to recover the ostrich Condor, taking a beating until Izumo shows up to help him bag the bird. His career threads through many of Konoha's landmark events. He first appears disguised alongside Izumo to discourage Chūnin Exam candidates, later serving as an invigilator, and after Tsunade takes office the pair double as her assistants and gate guards.

Assigned with Asuma and Shikamaru to hunt Akatsuki, he and Izumo ambush and stab the immortal Hidan, then can only watch, powerless to intervene, as Asuma falls to him, a loss they mourn deeply at the funeral. During the Fourth Shinobi World War he ambushes Kakuzu once more to settle the old score, binding the enemy with the chain that links his twin blades. Beyond those paired kunai, which he and Izumo use to strike a foe from both flanks at once, his heaviest weapon is a mace kept sealed inside a scroll, and he holds enough skill in genjutsu to convince exam-takers they had reached the wrong floor.
