Mutsuki Sohma

Tall and slim, Mutsuki has the kind of princely good looks that draw constant admiration. He inherits his father Yuki's silver hair and pale eyes along with his mother Machi's facial and eye shape, though a faint blue tint colors his light-grey eyes, set off by long lashes. His near shoulder-length hair sits slightly spiked with messy bangs, echoing the style of his uncle Kakeru. He personalizes the standard Kaibara boys' uniform, pairing a tailored dark-blue shirt and pale-blue tie with a yellow sweater, dark trousers, and brown loafers.

Poised, charming, and considerate, Mutsuki plays the role of model council member well, and unlike his father he happily embraces the prince treatment, though only when it benefits his friends. That makes him quite the operator; he readily uses his looks to smooth Sawa Mitoma out of awkward jams. Shiki notes that he recalls Shigure, if to a lesser degree, and in truth he most resembles his uncles Ayame and Kakeru: outgoing, teasing, confident, and a bit of a flirt, forever delivering absurd lines with a straight face.

He is carefree, a little scatterbrained, and famously messy, a trait he cheerfully admits he gets from both parents. For all the mischief, he is genuinely warm and protective, quick to look after those he cares about and openly proud of his family.

Mutsuki grows up an only child in a warm home, cherishing a family ritual of rising early after snowfalls to press footprints into the fresh powder before breakfast together. Because his parents stay close with Kyo and Tohru, he comes to know their son Hajime, and the two play together from childhood into sleepovers once they reach elementary school; he is also raised almost as a sibling to his cousin Michi. In his first year of middle school his father tells him about the Sohma family and its former curse, including his own past as the Rat. The revelation shocks Mutsuki but also makes sense of things he had witnessed, such as Ren nearly stabbing Shiki before Akito shielded the boy, and when he tells Yuki how grateful he is for his parents and their home, his father breaks down in happy tears.

Growing increasingly worried as Shiki withdraws from family gatherings under abuse from Ren's relatives, and after seeing a cruel note slipped into Shiki's bag, Mutsuki resolves to help by befriending Sawa Mitoma and using her to coax Shiki out of his shell. When the story proper begins he twice rescues Sawa, first from the principal Makoto Takei and then from her landlord, then recruits her onto the student council he serves as vice-president under Hajime.
