Hongo

Slim in frame, Hongo gathers his grimy blonde hair into a short ponytail, and a sewn-up scar marks the left portion of his brow. His usual attire leaves the chest visible beneath an unfastened coat. During Luffy's childhood his look closely matched the present version, although at that earlier time he seemed to lack a couple of teeth that he now has in full.

Hongo carries the festive streak typical of his crewmates, enjoying drink, celebration, and the seafaring life, yet he wore a far graver expression once fighting erupted at Marineford. Tidiness appeals to him strongly. Deception comes easily as well: to weigh how devoted Bartolomeo truly was, he passed off a harmless liquid as a deadly toxin and described it as inflicting prolonged, excruciating torment on whoever drank it.

Hongo already rode with Shanks' crew a dozen years earlier, celebrating beside the others and telling a young Luffy about the appeal of piracy. He resurfaced at the great clash of Marineford, standing with his captain and the frontline fighters, prepared to act should the battle spread. A week past the Raid on Onigashima, while the crew sailed off Wano, he was the one who reminded Shanks about Bartolomeo, who had been stirring up trouble across their islands. Later, after dropping Marco at Sphinx and steering toward Elbaph, Hongo looked on as Shanks alone overwhelmed the Kid Pirates. The crew eventually set out to punish Bartolomeo for torching their flag, and Hongo handed him a grim task: poison Luffy within a month and earn forgiveness. Bartolomeo refused and swallowed the supposed poison himself, only to discover it was fake, passing the test and winning the Barto Club their freedom, though not before their ship was blown apart as a parting lesson.
