Appearance

Hato is a tall, striking young woman whose straight blonde hair falls to her shoulders and ends either in arrow-shaped ornaments or in the points of her own hair. She favors a bodysuit trimmed at the collar with lace, its front marked by a spiral-shaped arrow that points downward, and she is rarely without the ornate high heels that serve as her main weapon once her Stand comes into play.

Personality

Bright and scatterbrained, Hato has a cheerful temperament that often tips into outright childishness for a woman her age. Her ignorance is a running trait: she once believed Hawaii belonged to Japan and derailed a family trip by neglecting the visas, and as a child she reportedly misread common kanji. She takes real pride in her looks and is serious about modeling, once fretting that her beauty might upstage a famous figure skater she was booked alongside.

Playful to the core, she trades pranks and good-natured insults with her younger brother Joshu. She fell for Tamaki Damo not for his appearance, which was frankly unpleasant, but for his romantic gestures, and she clung to her faith in him even as evidence of his betrayal mounted, breaking down in tears only once she was forced to kill him to shield her family. When her relatives are endangered she hardens into something cold and resolute, willing to use lethal force without flinching. Unlike Joshu she is devout, holding that God made both cattle and people, and she counts among the family members least warm toward her mother, Kaato, whom she knows to be a murderer.

History

Hato and her elder brother Jobin were the only siblings old enough to remember their mother, Kaato, who vanished when Hato was nine. Their father offered vague stories about her leaving or dying, but Hato dug up the truth herself and found that Kaato had been imprisoned for fifteen years for killing a child. When Josuke and Yasuho first arrive at the Higashikata house, Hato reveals her modeling career by picking up a dropped magazine that bears her own cover photo.

Her defining ordeal comes when she brings her new boyfriend, Tamaki Damo, home to meet the family. Damo turns out to be an enemy Stand user who liquefies and immobilizes the household. When he attacks Hato and pins her melted body to the fireplace, Josuke saves her by sealing her in a Soft & Wet bubble that carries her up the chimney. Emerging on the roof, Hato exposes her own Stand, Walking Heart, which projects long spikes from her heels and lets her scale walls, and she drives those spikes through Damo's skull, tearfully ending the man she loved to protect her family.

Later she is among the Higashikata knocked out by Poor Tom's Ozon Baby, and she watches in horror as the family is torn apart during Toru's rampage, losing both Jobin and her mother. After the danger finally passes, she gathers with the surviving family at the fruit parlor to celebrate her father's recovery, mourn the dead, and welcome Josuke as one of their own.
