Yoshikage Kira Just Wants to Live Quietly, Part 1

On a bright Morioh morning, the outwardly ordinary salaryman Yoshikage Kira relaxes at home with his so-called girlfriend, the severed hand of a woman he killed, presenting it with a ring before heading out for a sandwich at St. Gentleman's Bakery. Coworkers invite him to lunch, but he declines, and colleagues remark on how quietly he keeps to himself. Kira settles under a park tree to eat and admire the town.

Behind that same tree, Shigechi meets up with Josuke and Okuyasu to lend them lunch money. A stray dog snatches Shigechi's own St. Gentleman's bag, and when Shigechi grabs a replacement, he unknowingly takes Kira's bag, the one holding the hand. Kira spots the mix-up instantly and trails the boy, terrified that the ring and his fingerprints could lead police straight to him. Having left no trace across fifteen years of killing, he is determined to recover his girlfriend.

Kira follows Shigechi to the school's prep room, hiding in the gymnastics equipment when Josuke and Okuyasu unexpectedly join for coffee and tea. He fishes for the bag with a straightened coat hanger, dropping it and drawing Josuke's curiosity, but Shigechi wrongly accuses Josuke of trying to steal his sandwich. Kira manages to slip the bag back and escape when the gym teacher clears the boys out. Yet Shigechi notices Kira carrying a bag from the same bakery and suspects him of the theft. He reaches with Harvest, tearing the bag open and exposing the severed hand. Cornered, Kira delivers a monologue about his wish for a peaceful life and summons Killer Queen, intending to silence Shigechi.

The episode establishes Yoshikage Kira as Morioh's hidden serial killer, complete with his ritual devotion to a murdered woman's severed hand. An accidental bag swap by Shigechi threatens to expose Kira, prompting an extended pursuit through town and the school. Shigechi's Harvest ultimately reveals the hand, cornering Kira, who responds by summoning his Stand Killer Queen for the first time, setting the stage for their confrontation.

The twenty-first Diamond is Unbreakable episode, and the ninety-fifth overall, adapts Chapter 342 through the first half of Chapter 345. The adaptation adds domestic scenes of Kira, including him clipping his nails and presenting the ring to the hand, plus a line referencing Koichi and Yukako's relationship. In the original manga run, these Kira chapters preceded the Yukako Yamagishi Dreams of Cinderella story, an order the anime reverses. Naokatsu Tsuda's commentary notes how the everyday, fightless material proved unexpectedly difficult for an action-focused animation director.
