Chapter 51: I Do What I Can

Tremors keep rolling through the dome, and nobody inside can explain them. Phones come out, calls are attempted, and then one of the two surviving Bombers fires off an electromagnetic pulse that kills the lights and every signal in the building. Watching from a distance, the Scarred Man is pleased: the isolation guarantees that no help reaches Captain Celebrity.

Staff and heroes huddle in a side room to take stock. With their electronics dead and the venue cut off, Best Jeanist reads the pattern as a deliberate operation by a villain or an organization intent on bottling everyone inside. His answer splits the group. The event crew and part of the hero contingent will mind the audience and say nothing of the real situation, since panic would cost more than ignorance. The rest head for a small hatch at the crown of the dome, where anyone able to fly can slip out and raise the alarm.

Outside, the American hero is still braced against the wounded structure while explosive fists rain down on him. He decides to eat as many as it takes, betting that the creature's regeneration has a ceiling somewhere. Before the next swing lands, a projectile bursts one of its hands. Koichi Haimawari has arrived overhead, hanging inverted with his Quirk anchoring his feet to the roof.

Told to clear out, Koichi argues instead: his blasts can kill each fist before it ever reaches its target. He proves it by unveiling The Crawler's Shooty-Go-Blam-Blam-Blam-Blam-Blam, an unbroken stream of repulsion fire that shreds the Bomber's hands as fast as they form. Captain Celebrity sees the value and the limit at once, since none of it will actually put the creature down. That does not trouble Koichi, who intends to keep the explosions off until a real hero can get here, and who recognizes the pattern as the same one he has used against every criminal he has ever faced. Uncool, Captain Celebrity calls it, and also the only card they hold, so he asks the vigilante to hold the line.

A Bomber's electromagnetic pulse blacks out the Tokyo Sky Egg and severs all communication with the outside.

Best Jeanist identifies the attack as a planned operation and organizes a two-part response: hide the truth from the civilians, and push the flight-capable heroes out through an access hatch set into the dome's crown.

Koichi debuts The Crawler's Shooty-Go-Blam-Blam-Blam-Blam-Blam and takes up position defending Captain Celebrity.

Koichi articulates the approach that has always defined him, buying time until someone stronger can finish the job.

Serialization used a slightly different rendering of the title, 人事を尽くす (Jinji o Tsukusu), which was adjusted for the volume printing.

Episode 24 of the Vigilantes anime adapts the chapter, which ran nineteen pages on April 12, 2019, and appears in volume 7.
