Chapter 85

Izuku Midoriya calls his mother from the hospital and describes his injuries, and Inko responds by asking whether he might leave U.A. High School altogether. He hangs up and rejoins Eijiro Kirishima, Shoto Todoroki, Tenya Ida, and Momo Yaoyorozu. Tenya apologizes for the punch, then he and Momo restate their terms: they are present to make sure no one throws a punch tonight either.

Momo's device guides the group onto a train. Izuku asks whether the rest of the class knows, and learns they do, and that the class tried to talk them out of it, with Ochaco Uraraka arguing that being rescued by everyone would only humiliate Katsuki Bakugo. Shoto offers them all a way out. Eijiro will not take it, and Izuku thinks back to what he told his mother before leaving, that being All Might's successor rules out sitting still. He decides the door closed behind him long ago.

Two hours later the device leads them off the train and into Kamino Ward, part of Yokohama City in Kanagawa Prefecture. Close now to the League of Villains, the five buy disguises so they can move without being recognized. Stepping out of the shop, Izuku catches U.A.'s televised apology playing nearby, with Nezu, Shota Aizawa, and Sekijiro Kan accepting blame for failing to shield their students during the training camp raid. Pressed on what the school will actually do, Nezu promises hardened security and a full review of the crime prevention system. It satisfies nobody watching, and Izuku registers the mood as the school gets treated like the criminal.

The same broadcast is playing in the hideout, where Tomura Shigaraki, the Vanguard Action Squad, and Katsuki are watching. Tomura finds the public's contempt entirely reasonable, since hero society as it stands is unjust, and Spinner backs him: modern heroes work for pay, not out of selflessness. The League, Tomura says, fights for a just society, and intends to win. He orders Dabi to free Katsuki, and Dabi hesitates over the obvious risk before handing the job to Twice. Tomura wants Katsuki treated as an equal, confident the boy understands he cannot win. Mr. Compress offers his own apology for the abduction, insisting the League are not hoodlums committing casual crimes but people chained by the society around them, and hopes Katsuki can grasp the discrimination behind it.

The restraints come off. Katsuki answers Tomura's approach with Explosion, telling the League that nothing they say will move him, because the sight of All Might winning settled the matter long ago. Surpassing All Might has been the dream from the start. When the smoke thins, Tomura's face is bare: the hand he wears there has been blown clean off.

The students take a train to Kamino Ward, where the tracker places Katsuki, and change into disguises before moving in. Nezu, Shota Aizawa, and Vlad King deliver a live apology to a hostile public over the kidnapping. Tomura makes his case to Katsuki, convinced a boy that exhausted by hero society belongs with the League, and Katsuki answers by blasting him and declaring he intends to win the way All Might wins.

Nineteen pages, published April 4, 2016, in the eighteenth issue of that year and collected in volume 10 during the Hideout Raid arc. Kamino, Yokohama, is the setting, and Explosion is the Quirk on display. Episode 46 covers this chapter. The disguises are individually assigned: Izuku goes as a gangster, Eijiro as a punk, Tenya as a barber, Momo as a hostess, and Shoto as a host.
