Summary

Mirai gears up to depart with Kakashi and Might Guy, saying goodbye to her mother and to a memorial that stands for her father while wondering why Asuma chose her name. As she prays at her grandfather's memorial, Shikamaru passes by with Boruto and Shikadai, out to sample a new burger spot. Shikamaru confirms she is carrying Asuma's chakra blades and, noting she shares his chakra nature, tells her mastering them should come easily, then dismisses her answer to one of his riddles as overthinking. After the Nara move on, Mirai fills Boruto in on her mission.

At the gates her mood sours when Kakashi and Guy show up loose and unhurried, reminding her the job calls for passing as a civilian. She misreads their idle banter as some elite form of disguise and only winds herself tighter, at one point misreading a harmless roadside traveler as a lurking foe.

Key Events

Reaching town, the trio browse the shops until a pickpocket goes for Kakashi's wallet, and Kakashi pins him while Mirai chases down the accomplice and freezes him with her genjutsu, handing both over to the police. She stews over letting the thieves get so near and over Kakashi's ease, but he reveals the stolen wallet was a decoy and that force is not the only way to solve a problem. They visit a tree Kakashi treats as sacred ground, the filming site of the Icha Icha movie, though the men refuse to explain the books given Mirai's age.

When she presses about the assignment, Mirai is stunned to learn there is no real mission at all. That night she watches Kakashi and Guy dine from a distance until Kakashi waves her in, and he admits her stiff earnestness reminds him of Asuma. Mirai voices how uneasy it feels that everyone knows her father better than she does, and questions what purpose ninja serve in an age of peace. She also realizes the outing runs closer to twenty days than the two she had assumed, and braces herself as the group readies to enter the Land of Hot Water, where Hidan, the man who killed her father, was born.

Notes

This installment launches the Steam Ninja Scrolls arc adapted from the Konoha Shinden novel and shares its title with a chapter of that story. During Kakashi's excitement over the Icha Icha filming spot, Obito's Mangekyō Sharingan flashes briefly in his eyes. The anime also seems to set aside the novel's timeline, since Boruto appearing with his forehead protector places these events after the Graduation Exams arc rather than alongside Naruto Gaiden. It aired in Japan on May 12, 2019, and in English on May 25, 2021, with Golden Time and Ride or Die as its themes.
