Hareji

Hareji stands at a middling height, and a crescent-shaped mark scars the left half of his face. His turquoise hair rises into a pompadour up front and ties off as a topknot behind. While locked up at Udon he wore the regulation convict garb, and the anime later swaps it for a yellow-and-black striped kimono tied with a white tasuki once he sheds the prison stripes. In flashbacks set decades earlier, before the scar appeared, he is dressed in a pale patterned kimono.

Hareji nurses a bitter grudge against the Beasts Pirates and took genuine pleasure in watching Luffy rebel. Yet defeat and captivity have worn down his resolve, leaving him to follow Babanuki's orders rather than fight. The anime gives him a restless edge that obliged Hyougoro to settle him down. Long before Oden became a national hero, Hareji feared him, even hiding his pig out of the warlord's path.

He has enough muscle to have helped pin Luffy together with the other inmates, and in his younger days he hoisted a hefty pig in his arms; the anime also hands him a sword. Long ago, when Oden returned to the capital and the townsfolk scrambled to hide their families, Hareji and another man cleared their pets from his route. After Oden's death, he was thrown into Udon's Prisoner Mine for rebelling against Kaidou. When Luffy sparked a revolt in the mine, Hareji and the rest obeyed Babanuki and held him down, but they released Luffy once Kikunojo threatened them.

In the anime, Hareji resurfaces during the Onigashima raid alongside Zangirimaru and Hanji, scanning the shore through binoculars and growing anxious before landing until Hyougoro tells the trio to relax. Later, with Luffy and Zoro unable to reach the rooftop, Hareji joins Hyougoro's team to face Goki, Juki, and a band of Gifters, startled when Hyougoro suddenly laughs and explains his faith that they cannot fail with Luffy among them.
