Appearance

Slender for a giant and very tall, Road keeps the right half of his face hidden behind long dark blue hair. He bundles up in a fur-lined grey coat and matching trousers, cinched by a broad brown belt with a large yellow skull buckle, and drapes a wide yellow cape striped in paler yellow over bumpy shoulder plates. A long striped scarf wraps his neck and mouth, and brown gloves cover his hands. In his Sun God guise he crowns himself with a deer skull and switches to a dark coat, pale fur leggings, and high heels. The anime shows him as a newborn with olive skin and short dark brown hair, swaddled in pink cloth.

Personality

Meticulous and protective of the realms he governs, Road flies into a rage when the Straw Hats wound his guardian animals. That care has limits, though, since he laughs with delight upon learning Glutbunny was slain. His pride runs deep enough that he bristles at his captain bowing to a human, and it leads him to badly underestimate the crew he believes he can cage forever. He revels in role-play to the point of a full god complex, ruling his diorama and calling its guardians first his pets, then his servants. A self-described pervert, he fixates on beautiful women like Nami, whom he dubs his idol, and his lust drives him into reckless blunders such as walking straight into an obvious trap. He even craves punishment from Gerd and Nami alike. Gerd judges him a worse disgrace than Loki, and a superstitious streak leaves him terrified of demonic possession. Caring little for the wider world, he would rather Loki simply be freed to rampage elsewhere. His signature laugh is a chuckled "Defufufufu."

History

Road was born in an Elbaph village around sixty-three years ago, his arrival marked at the start of the twelve-day fast before the Winter Solstice. Bullied as a child for his odd habits, he found a steadfast friend in Hajrudin, who admired the sea charts he drew. He later converted an abandoned detention center into his home and built the diorama where he imprisoned humans and posed as their Sun God. Joining Hajrudin's effort to revive the Giant Warrior Pirates, he became one of Buggy's Delivery's five top-earning S-Class soldiers, prized for his unmatched skill in navigation and cartography. After the crew resigned to join the Straw Hat Grand Fleet, Road openly objected to swearing fealty to Luffy. When his pet Muginn delivered the sleeping Straw Hats to him during the Elbaph Arc, he locked them in the Land of Gods, then pursued them in a fury when they fought free, only to be electrocuted by Nami through Zeus. After fleeing up to the Sun World, he fell for the crew's trap and was knocked out by Gerd and Goldberg, who hauled him back to the village and crucified him. Pardoned at the banquet, he reluctantly aided the group, guiding them through Aurust Castle and recounting King Harald's legend along the way. As the Knights of God moved to subjugate the giants, Road threw in with the Straw Hats, joining Gerd and Goldberg in the combined slash San Sho: Gokoku and rushing to save his younger brother Bjorn, catching the boy as he fell despite the thorns piercing them both. His selfless act finally won Gerd's respect and shifted his crew's view of him.
