Roshio

Roshio stands tall and heavily built, his broad features set beneath long dreadlocks of white. An intricate tattoo of skulls and red patterning runs along his left arm. For clothing he favors an indigo sleeveless shirt with black trousers, while his headband repeats his Jolly Roger, a hanged figure shown against a red ground.

The townsfolk of Mock Town regard him as deranged, and the label fits. After losing a hand of cards to one man, Roshio killed him where he stood. That savagery rebounded on him when he beat Bellamy at the same game and was thrashed in turn, bellowing in fury at the accusation that he had cheated. His emblem of a body dangling from a rope captures that bloodthirsty nature. Even so, he is not wholly a thug. When Vegapunk addressed the world, Roshio was the lone figure in town who did not jeer, instead taking the broadcast seriously.

A bounty of forty-two million Berries marks Roshio as a notable captain, yet Bellamy overcame him with ease. His most striking trait is sheer durability, since he pulled through grievous wounds dealt by both Bellamy and Sarquiss. In the anime he was also shown carrying an ordinary revolver.

His downfall played out during the Jaya Arc. Winning a hand against Bellamy the Hyena, he was branded a cheat, and Bellamy drove a knife clean through his hand to fasten it against the tabletop. When Sarquiss confirmed the false charge, the captain was shot, smashed over the head with a liquor bottle, and set on fire by a tossed match before being hurled from the upper floor; Bellamy then dropped down and ended the fight with his Spring Hopper technique. Databooks recorded Roshio as dead, but he in fact lived through it and recovered, and two years on he was watching Vegapunk's transmission back in Mock Town. The anime reworked the scene, swapping the stabbing and flames for an arm-crushing grab and cutting the gunfire.
