Lean and upright in build, he wears a long beard and is almost always depicted with his eyes shut or nearly so. Because his head is abnormally elongated, his Marine cap takes the form of an exceptionally tall bearskin to fit it. A standard officer's coat hangs from his shoulders like a cape, and beneath it he wears a water-green jacket over an unbuttoned shirt, trimmed with pale yellow rope-like decoration and matching trousers. A decade before the series began, his beard was sparse, his eyes already half-lidded, and he dressed in a greenish suit with a spotted yellow tie under a normal naval cap.

He carries a degree of conscience, choosing to evacuate everyone stranded on Enies Lobby before opening fire, which suggests he leans toward a gentler reading of justice than many of his peers. Even so, his obedience to the World Nobles runs absolute: he treated their escaped slaves as recoverable property and felt no pity that one such captive was only a young girl named Koala. He typically keeps a composed expression even amid fierce fighting.

As a vice admiral he can direct a Buster Call in concert with other officers of his rank and commands the soldiers below him. The sheer size of his head lends him devastatingly powerful headbutts, and like all vice admirals he wields Haki. In battle he carries two matching swords with pink-wrapped, Japanese-style hilts, broad guards set with red gems and curved blades that he grips in reverse. Years ago, then a rear admiral, he reported the sinking of Kadar's ship to Borsalino, and later led an ambush against Fisher Tiger on Foolshout Island, where the wounded Sun Pirates captain ultimately died. At Enies Lobby he answered John Giant's summons alongside Onigumo, Doberman, Yamakaji, and Momonga to carry out the Buster Call, holding the Franky Family at gunpoint until the Marines were verified before the bombardment leveled the island. He afterward joined the defense of Marineford during the Summit War, ordering troops to fire on Whitebeard's forces, and was present at the Red Port during the Levely.
