Landing! The Burning Island, Punk Hazard

Pushing further into the New World, the Thousand Sunny draws near a blazing island that none of the three needles on the new Log Pose will indicate. Nami reads the silence as an anomaly, yet their captain stays set on landing anyway. A frantic emergency call comes through, and though Robin cautions that signals like this are a standard Marine ploy for hunting down pirates, Luffy picks it up regardless. The voice belongs to a man on the island, slain by a samurai before he can finish pleading. Following the line, the crew trades Wano lore, with Brook sharing a brief tale and Zoro recalling how he gained Shusui.

Straws decide the landing team, and Zoro, Robin, and Usopp set out alongside Luffy. Using her Milky Road, Nami lays down a cloud path that floats Mini Merry across the fiery waters in safety. The place turns out to be Punk Hazard, an island the World Government has sealed off, and Zoro cuts open the gate of an old government compound. Crossing the scorched, perpetually flaming ground, the group is brought up short by a dragon eyeing them hungrily.

Far away on Raijin Island, the same distress exchange is picked up by Smoker and Tashigi as G-5 Marines abuse captive pirates. Smoker commands the unit to make for the burning island, setting the Marines on a heading that will cross the crew's trail. Aboard the Sunny, those who stayed behind enjoy a dessert from Sanji, and Nami puzzles over clouds across the way that look strangely arctic, a notion Franky brushes off as impossible.

This opens the Punk Hazard Arc within the Dressrosa Saga, with the eyecatcher score reworked to lean on trumpet instruments. Fresh scenes hand Zoro a flashback to receiving Shusui, stretch the straw-drawing bit with comic Usopp moments, and have Sanji cook lunches from Panz Fry's giant shellfish, since the deep-sea fish was lost in the prior arc. G-5's cruelty toward its prisoner is softened from the source, and Smoker's reasoning is altered so he ties the crew's course to this island rather than naming the New World's first three islands.
