A month before, over on Gartel Island, the crew of the Red Hair Pirates has subdued the Barto Club for trespassing and torching their flag. Chaining Bartolomeo, Shanks warns that overlooking the offense would erode faith in his banner and imperil his allies, and Hongo hands over a poison said to bring agonizing death, telling the captive to slip it to Luffy within a month as fair settlement.

Bartolomeo swallows the dose himself instead, declaring that he was never told by Luffy to drink the sake or fly his banner, so the captain should stay out of a quarrel that is not his. He sobs over never witnessing Luffy crowned, then ruins the moment with a burp, the poison having been a sham.
