The chapter traces how the young Linlin and the cook Streusen first banded together to launch the Big Mom Pirates. In the present her scream tears apart both the poison rockets and the getaway mirror, leaving Bege to shift into a fortress and shield the cornered alliance.
Still wailing over Carmel's vanishing, the Emperor never learns that two figures actually witnessed the truth that day. One, a warrior of Elbaph devoted to the orphanage, was so horrified that he fled the island for good, and the story he carried only deepened the giants' hatred of Linlin. The second witness, a cook and washed-up pirate by the name of Streusen, was instead delighted by what he saw. Possessing the Kuku Kuku no Mi power to convert raw matter into finished dishes, he resolved to throw in with her and keep her endlessly fed, and so he approached the abandoned child with that pledge.
Back in the present, Streusen is frozen by her cry and pleads for her to recover before the assassins act. The three Fire Tank gunmen loose their rockets, yet a surge of her scream paired with Supreme King Haki blows the shots apart in midair. The Emperor recalls misreading Carmel's vision of a land where all races meet as equals, taking it as a wish that everyone grow to her own size, a misunderstanding that later spawned the gigantification experiments. Now in possession of the Soru Soru no Mi taken from Carmel, she and Streusen built their life of piracy, her bounty climbing from fifty million to past five hundred million while she was still young. Katakuri molds mochi earplugs for the crew, and as the Fire Tank Pirates scatter and the mirror is smashed by her cry, Bege rises into a colossal fortress and orders the alliance inside.
The chapter strongly implies that Linlin unknowingly caused the disappearance of Carmel and the orphanage children, seen only by a single giant and by Streusen. Soon afterward the Soru Soru no Mi once belonging to Carmel becomes hers, and together with Streusen, confirmed as the user of the Kuku Kuku no Mi, she founds the Big Mom Pirates. Her earliest recorded bounty of fifty million later climbs beyond five hundred million, the first Emperor bounty ever depicted. Bege's launcher assault fails when the Yonko's scream and Haki obliterate the rockets and the escape mirror, prompting him to become a fortress to rescue the surrounded crews.

This chapter is part of the Whole Cake Island Arc. Her overly literal interpretation of Carmel's dream is what eventually drives her to set Caesar on the gigantification research. The second site of the Sheep's House would in time become Whole Cake Island. Pandaman appears in a cameo during her early raiding years. The mochi earplugs Katakuri fashions let the Big Mom Pirates shake off the scream and close in on the Fire Tank crew and the Straw Hats alike.
Big Mom possesses the Soru Soru no Mi, the Soul-Soul Fruit, which she took from Carmel, and can combine a devastating scream with Supreme King Haki powerful enough to blow apart incoming rockets in midair.
Streusen is a cook and former pirate who ate the Kuku Kuku no Mi, letting him turn raw matter into finished dishes, and he befriends the abandoned young Linlin, pledging to keep her endlessly fed.
Chapter 868 reveals that Big Mom came into possession of Carmel's Soru Soru no Mi after Carmel's disappearance, which Linlin had unknowingly caused.
After the Fire Tank Pirates' rocket assault fails and Big Mom's scream destroys the escape mirror, Bege transforms into a colossal fortress and orders the alliance inside for shelter.
Big Mom misread Carmel's dream of different races living as equals as a wish for everyone to grow to her own size, a mistaken belief that later drove her to set Caesar on gigantification research.
