Chew

Broad and well-built, Chew has blue skin and noticeably full lips. A tattoo marking his crew sits on his right shoulder, and his usual outfit pairs a striped blue vest with brown leather trousers, sandals, and a necklace. During his earlier days among the Sun Pirates he instead wore a dark tee printed with a circle. His name has bounced between several spellings over the years, with Japanese material favoring Chew while the English releases lean toward Choo.

Compared to his rowdier shipmates, Chew carries himself with a calm, almost icy menace, rarely raising his voice. That composure does not soften his cruelty, since he carries out Arlong's commands without flinching and shows no remorse for killing humans. He shares the crew's contempt for humankind, viewing fish-men as the superior race, and it is exactly that smugness that leads him to write off Usopp as easy prey. He also tends to cap his sentences with a kissing-sound tic.

In his youth Chew gazed up at the Sabaody Ferris wheel alongside Hatchan, Arlong, and Kuroobi. After Fisher Tiger raided Mary Geoise and founded the Sun Pirates, the Arlong group folded into Tiger's crew and roamed the Grand Line battling Marines. When Tiger died of his wounds following an ambush and Arlong was captured, command passed to Jinbe, and once Jinbe accepted a Warlord seat the crew split, with Chew following Arlong's banner toward East Blue. There they seized Cocoyasi Village and killed Bell-mere. During the takeover of the Conomi Islands, Chew helped his fellow officers crush a Marine detachment, having earlier hauled a captured Usopp back to Arlong Park. As a fish-man his strength dwarfs an ordinary person's, and he fires water from his mouth with bullet-like force through Mizudeppo, escalates it into the rapid-fire Hyappatsu Mizudeppo, and swells his body to unleash the explosive Mizu Taiho. When Luffy's crew stormed the park, Chew faced Usopp, who wore him down by fleeing, then doused him in alcohol from a thrown sake bottle and set him alight, finishing the dazed fish-man with repeated hammer blows. He was eventually taken into Marine custody. He marked Usopp's first solo victory in the series.
