Nemu Kurotsuchi

Nemu presents as a slim young woman with green eyes and black hair kept in a long braid beneath parted bangs. She dresses in a short black kimono cut to mid-thigh over a white nagajuban, its sleeves narrower than the usual Shinigami cut and puffed at the shoulder, cinched by a broad white obi and a red cord. Her lieutenant's armband sits on the left sleeve, and she rounds out the look with white gloves over the backs of her hands, a dark red choker, white tabi, and strapped black sandals with low heels. As a small child her hair was left unkempt and she wore a plain white kimono.

Years of cruelty from Mayuri, the man she calls father and creator, left Nemu timid and inward, most often silent and wearing a downcast look that seldom breaks into a smile. Her devotion to him holds regardless, deep enough that she will wound herself to hand him an edge in a fight, yet she carries a kindness he lacks, once saving Uryū Ishida's life to repay him for letting Mayuri live. Sharing his blood, she also mirrors his tastes, favoring pike, spurning onion, drawn to the same experiments on living humans, and poring over every last column of the Seireitei Communication. She is even floated as a future officer of the Shinigami Women's Association, a role she takes on with unexpected delight, executing Yachiru Kusajishi's schemes as faithfully as her captain's own orders.

Nemu is the manufactured daughter of Mayuri Kurotsuchi, built from a fusion of Gigai and artificial-soul technology as the seventh product of his Nemuri Project, an effort to grow fresh souls from Konpaku cells; before that name she bore the designation Nanagō Nemuri. During the Ryoka's assault on the Seireitei, she stood at Mayuri's side through his duel with Uryū Ishida, grabbing the Quincy and taking a blade meant for him only to be beaten by her own captain for it. After Uryū spared Mayuri's life, a wounded Nemu quietly repaid the debt, revealing where he could find the antidote to Mayuri's poison and explaining that her shared blood left her immune to it.

She accompanied Mayuri into Hueco Mundo, where Szayelaporro Granz seized her as a hostage and later drained her body dry to resurrect himself, unaware that the very act dosed him with one of the many drugs her captain stockpiled inside her, a trap that helped seal his defeat before Mayuri restored her. She opened a Garganta during the clash with Yammy Llargo, then served at Mayuri's side throughout the war with the Wandenreich. Her end came against Pernida Parnkgjas: she first severed her own arm to catch an arrow bound for Mayuri, then forced her body past its limits to hurl him clear and tear through one of Pernida's clones, insisting her purpose was to protect him rather than to evolve as he wished. The Quincy's nerves shredded her moments afterward, though Mayuri turned her remains into the weapon that finally destroyed the clones from within.

As an engineered being, Nemu was built for durability, able to survive wounds that would kill an ordinary soul and to shrug off her father's poison thanks to their shared blood. Her body doubles as a hidden pharmacy, dosing anything that consumes or invades it, and Mayuri can revive her from a deathlike state. She wields surprising strength and speed, excavating a laboratory with her bare hands and plucking a Heilig Pfeil from the air, and she can spin her arm like a drill or briefly drive her system to the brink of collapse for a burst of overwhelming power. At that extreme she can shear off pieces of her own soul as weapons, most drastically the Gikon Jūrinjū, which spends part of her spirit to blast a hole clean through a target.
