A gentle anime-only breather, episode 316 sends Hitsugaya on leave to the living world, where he reconnects with Haru, an old woman from his first posting, and helps a lingering spirit finally see the snow he died before ever witnessing.
Rangiku turns up to an empty office and learns her captain has taken leave, leaving her stuck with the division's paperwork. In the living world, Hitsugaya subs in for an injured player on Karin's soccer team. Afterward he is approached by Haru, an elderly woman who can perceive spirits and knew him during his very first assignment. At her home, crowded with the dead who keep her company, Karin meets Yosuke, a Plus who has lingered there. Haru explains that Yosuke died on the way to a family ski trip and cannot move on because he never got to see snow.
As they leave, Karin asks whether it is safe to let Yosuke remain as he is. Hitsugaya recounts his early days hunting Hollows in the living world, when Haru first took him in after sensing his Reiatsu, and admits he never performed Konsō on Yosuke and is watching over him himself. Karin invites him to stay at the Kurosaki home, to Yuzu's delight and Ichigo's protective unease.
The next day Hitsugaya carves Yosuke a small ice figure with his Zanpakutō. He soon notes it is strange the Plus has not yet degenerated into a Hollow. Karin then finds Haru collapsed, and Hitsugaya realizes the old woman has been secretly burning her own fading Reiatsu to hold Yosuke's transformation at bay. Too weak to continue, Haru can no longer stop it, and Yosuke turns into a Hollow, seizing her and lunging at Karin. Hitsugaya saves Karin but tells her there is no way to spare Yosuke now.

Five Bleach female characters, ranked and settled. Yoruichi sits at number five, the spot nobody expects, and our number one is an Arrancar with a soft heart....

Naruto vs Luffy with the twist nobody asked for: Luffy tickled Hinata on date night, and she kind of liked it. We break down the whole fight and commit to a winner....
Karin pleads with Yosuke to hold on just long enough to see snow. Haru uses the last of her power to still him and apologizes as Hitsugaya delivers the finishing blow. Yosuke briefly returns to his Plus form in time to watch the first snowfall begin before passing on. Haru apologizes for the trouble, but Hitsugaya assures her it was never her fault. With leave still remaining, he decides to visit his own grandmother. The closing Shinigami Illustrated Picture Book has Yuzu invite Orihime, Uryu, and Sado to dinner to celebrate the start of a new story arc, teasing the next episode. This installment is anime-original with no manga source and no real battle.
