Annin is the ancient guardian of the Furnace of Eight Divisions, the boundary between the living world and the Other World. She works under King Yemma and has protected the furnace for thousands of years.
Annin guards the Furnace of Eight Divisions, a massive flame that serves as the border between Earth and the afterlife. The furnace's fire also connects to Fire Mountain, where the Ox-King and Chi-Chi live. When the flames on Fire Mountain grow dangerously out of control, Goku travels to the furnace to find a solution.
Upon arriving, Goku discovers Annin, an ancient and immensely powerful woman who has maintained the furnace for countless centuries. She initially appears in a giant form but can also take on a more normal-sized appearance. Annin explains that the Furnace of Eight Divisions cannot simply be extinguished, as doing so would collapse the barrier between the living and the dead, unleashing catastrophic consequences.
Instead, Goku must use the Bansho Fan to temporarily control the flames without destroying the furnace itself. After a brief confrontation in which Annin tests Goku's resolve, she allows him to use the fan. Goku succeeds in calming the fire, saving Fire Mountain and its inhabitants. Annin is among the few characters in the original Dragon Ball series who possess godlike power without being formally part of the divine hierarchy.
