King Gurumes is the main villain of the first Dragon Ball film, Curse of the Blood Rubies. Once a normal human ruler, his greed for the precious blood rubies beneath his kingdom caused him to mutate into a monstrous creature plagued by insatiable hunger.
King Gurumes rules over the Land of Gurumes, where the discovery of valuable blood rubies beneath his territory sets his downfall in motion. His obsessive mining of the gems triggers a physical mutation, transforming him from a small man into an enormous purple monster with a hunger that no amount of food can satisfy. Desperate for a cure, he concludes that only a wish from the Eternal Dragon Shenron can end his suffering.
Gurumes dispatches his two top soldiers, Pasta and Bongo, to collect the Dragon Balls. They confiscate Goku's Four-Star Dragon Ball, leaving payment behind as a formality. This theft draws Goku and Bulma into the conflict. Along the way, they meet Penny, a girl from Gurumes' kingdom who seeks Master Roshi's help to overthrow the tyrant and save her devastated homeland.
The confrontation with Gurumes ends when Shenron is summoned and Penny wishes for the blood rubies to vanish. With the cursed gems gone, Gurumes reverts to his original, harmless form and is freed from his mutation. As the villain of the franchise's very first theatrical film, Gurumes holds a unique place in Dragon Ball history even though his story exists outside the main continuity.
