Biography and Story Role

Van Zant is a wealthy, unhinged man accompanied by his servant Smitty. When Majin Buu begins terrorizing the Earth, Van Zant sees the pandemonium as an opportunity to murder people without consequence. He roams the countryside with a rifle, shooting innocent bystanders for his own amusement.

His recklessness reaches a critical point when he shoots Mr. Satan's puppy, Bee, and then fires on Mr. Satan himself. This act of violence against the only person who had successfully befriended Majin Buu sends the creature into an uncontrollable rage. Buu's fury becomes so intense that the evil within him separates from his body, creating Evil Buu.

Van Zant's actions are arguably among the most consequential in the entire Buu Saga, despite his own weakness. By provoking Buu at the worst possible moment, he indirectly triggers the chain of events leading to Super Buu and, eventually, Kid Buu. Van Zant himself is quickly vaporized by Evil Buu shortly after the split occurs.
