Goku battles Nam in the semifinals as the noble warrior unleashes his devastating Cross Arm Dive. After surviving the aerial assault, Goku advances to the finals against Jackie Chun.
The second semifinal pits Goku against Nam, a warrior who entered the tournament not for glory but for the prize money his drought-stricken village desperately needs. Nam throws everything he has at Goku, but the boy absorbs every blow and bounces back. Goku counters with a relentless mix of punches, kicks, and tail strikes that push Nam to the brink.
With no other options, Nam leaps high into the sky and crosses his arms in front of his face, forming an X-shape as he accelerates downward. The Cross Arm Dive slams into Goku's chest with tremendous force, leaving him motionless on the arena floor. Nam bows his head and whispers an apology, believing the fight is over. The announcer begins the ten-count, and Nam estimates Goku will be unconscious for over a week. Goku springs to his feet before the count of ten.
Nam attempts the Cross Arm Dive a second time, but Goku follows him into the air. The two exchange blows on the way down. Goku drops ahead of Nam and dodges the dive at the last instant, letting Nam crash into the empty ring. A swift kick sends Nam out of bounds, and Goku earns his spot in the finals as the youngest finalist in tournament history.
The Cross Arm Dive is the episode's centerpiece, a visually striking attack that carries real dramatic tension. Nam plummeting from extreme height with his arms crossed, the impact leaving the arena silent, and Goku lying completely still all create a genuine sense of danger. When Goku stands up before the ten-count, the relief is palpable.
After the match, Jackie Chun approaches Nam privately and reveals his true identity as Master Roshi. He gives Nam a capsule to carry water home to his village and explains why he entered the tournament in disguise: to prevent Goku and Krillin from winning too early and losing their motivation to keep training. Nam repays the favor by briefly impersonating Roshi in the crowd to throw off Yamcha's suspicions.
Roshi's reasoning for competing in disguise is a pivotal moment for the series. He explains that if his students won the championship and believed they were the strongest, they would stop training. By standing as an unbeatable wall, he ensures they always have a higher goal to chase. This philosophy proves prophetic, as Goku spends the rest of the series pursuing opponents stronger than himself.
