Thieves, Fakes, and a Deadly Army

While Goku bathes in a river, a young thief steals his clothes, Power Pole, backpack, and Dragon Radar. Goku chases the boy on the Flying Nimbus but the thick forest provides cover. By extending his Power Pole above the treeline, Goku frightens the thief into returning everything except the Dragon Radar, which has already been pawned off in a nearby town.

Emperor Pilaf Returns

At the pawn shop, Emperor Pilaf is haunted by flashbacks of Goku destroying his castle. He purchases what he believes is the Four-Star Dragon Ball and flees in his airship. Goku arrives moments later, reclaims his radar, and gives chase. But Pilaf escapes into the sky, and the trail goes cold.

The Red Ribbon Enters

Shortly after Goku leaves, Colonel Silver and the Red Ribbon Army descend on the same pawn shop, also seeking a Dragon Ball. The shop owner has been selling counterfeits from a box of fakes in the back room. When Silver discovers the deception, he kills the shopkeeper without hesitation. The Dragon Radar's true signal leads to a six-star ball sitting in a gull's nest on the roof, unnoticed by everyone. Meanwhile, Pilaf's "treasure" shatters when he drops it, revealing it too was a fake. The mysterious Commander Red is glimpsed for the first time, a shadowy figure petting a cat.

Three Factions, Zero Cooperation

The comedic timing of this episode is superb. Goku, Pilaf, and the Red Ribbon Army all converge on the same tiny pawn shop within minutes of each other, each chasing a Dragon Ball, and none of them leave with the real one. The gull sitting on the roof with the actual six-star ball while chaos unfolds below is a perfect visual punchline.

Silver's Cold Introduction

Colonel Silver's murder of the pawn shop owner marks a sharp tonal shift. The Red Ribbon Army is not played for laughs the way Pilaf's gang is. Silver's casual violence establishes the new antagonists as a genuine threat, a military organization willing to kill civilians over a single lead.

New Enemies on the Horizon

This is the first entirely anime-original episode in the series. It introduces Commander Red in a shadowy, Blofeld-style reveal and establishes Colonel Silver as the Red Ribbon Army's first field operative. Emperor Pilaf's return creates a three-faction dynamic that drives the early Red Ribbon Army arc. The fake Dragon Ball gag also highlights how little the general public understands about the real artifacts.
