Tien, Krillin, Yamcha, and Chiaotzu arrive at a mountain village during a festival. Meanwhile, Goku plays a blindfolded game of tag with Mr. Popo to sharpen his ki sensing. The celebration turns dangerous when the village's sacred mountain reveals itself to be a volcano.
On the Lookout, Mr. Popo devises a new exercise: a blindfolded game of pursuit where Goku must evade Mr. Popo by masking his spiritual energy, and then chase Popo by sensing his. Goku fails both tasks, unable to either hide from or locate his teacher. The training reinforces that Goku's ability to sense and conceal ki is still far below where it needs to be.
Below, Tien and the others hear drums in the night and are found by villagers wearing devil masks. A girl named Mint invites them to her community's festival, held in honor of the great mountain they consider a guardian god. The celebration is lively, with Krillin getting drunk after a stranger hands him alcohol. He challenges Mint's large brother Paul to a fight and wins with a surprise headbutt. But the festivities take a dark turn when animals begin to panic and Chiaotzu senses something deeply wrong. The mountain begins to rumble and erupt. What the villagers worshipped as a protector is actually a volcano, and its lava now threatens to consume everything in its path.
Chiaotzu's psychic sensitivity allows him to detect the volcanic activity before anyone else, establishing his unique value within the group. The contrast between the joyful festival and the impending catastrophe creates strong dramatic tension. Krillin's drunken bravery, fighting a man he would normally avoid, provides comedy that offsets the danger.
Goku's blindfolded chase with Mr. Popo directly parallels the warriors' situation on the ground. Both involve learning to perceive hidden dangers. Goku must feel ki through empty space, while the fighters must now contend with a threat that was literally hiding beneath their feet.
The episode's title reflects its structure: Goku trains alone in the sky while his friends forge their own way on the ground. Each group faces challenges suited to their level and circumstances. The volcanic eruption sets up an immediate crisis for the next episode, giving the Earth-bound fighters a chance to prove their growth outside of a tournament ring.
